A vegan activist who stole a calf and dead piglet from farms near Mandurah has avoided jail.

James Warden, 25, was sentenced in the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday after being found guilty while on trial.

Warden was sentenced to a suspended 10-month jail term for breaking into a Brunswick dairy farm in October 2018 and stealing an 11-day-old calf.

The calf was then taken to an animal sanctuary in Waroona.

He was sentenced to a further suspended two-month jail term for trespassing on a Pinjarra piggery and stealing a dead piglet.

His co-offender, 26-year-old Arkadiusz Swiebodzinksi, was fined $5000 for taking part in stealing the calf.
