There is an urgent warning for dog owners to check public water bowls at parks after rat poison was found in one at a Cooloongup park.

Sophie Kesia was walking her dogs at Hourglass Reserve on Saturday when she made the discovery.

Unfortunately her dogs had already drank out of the bowl before she realised there was poison in it.

In a post to Facebook, Ms Kesia said she took them to Baldivis Vets.

Their condition is not yet known.

"I tipped it away and rinsed it out but hopefully whichever awful person put it there hasn’t put it in any other bowls too," Ms Kesia said in her post.

"It has been reported to the ranger but please be vigilant with your pups just incase there’s more."

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said she was shocked by the news.

"While this is a matter for the RSPCA, our Rangers have assisted investigations by checking CCTV footage and canvassing local community members to try to identify the offender," she said.

"This act is abhorrent and we ask that our residents be vigilant when taking their pets out for a walk to ensure their pets are also not victims of poisoning."

Anyone with information is asked to get in contact with Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the City of Rockingham rangers (08) 9528 0333.
