Around 50 female Year 10 Pinjarra Senior High School students have taken their first steps toward a rewarding career in the resources sector after attending the launch of the Alcoa Pinjarra Prospects Program last week.

An interactive student mentoring program run by Alcoa and Pinjarra Senior High school, the program aims to make local young women aware of the potential career and educational opportunities available at Alcoa and the broader resources sector.

Alcoa operates two bauxite mines and three alumina refineries in the Kwinana, Peel and Upper South West areas of WA.

The company employs about 4000 people in WA, most of them in the Peel region.

Pinjarra Alumina Refinery Manager Mark Zaborowski said the initiative was an important gateway for young local women looking to establish a career after their high school studies.

“Students learn about the diverse range of career opportunities available to them locally at Alcoa including apprenticeships, traineeships, graduate positions and student vacation placements,” Mr Zaborowski said

“These cover a range of disciplines including environment, health and safety, human resources, mining engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and procurement.”

As part of the year-long program, students will participate in interactive workshops and networking opportunities, take part in bauxite mine and alumina refinery tours, learn about different career pathways, and listen to personal and professional stories from Alcoa employees.

The Pinjarra Prospects Program, which has been operating for seven years, was recognised as an outstanding company initiative at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA’s annual Women in Resources Awards.
