The company has confirmed one person has died at the Paraburdoo mine.
Employees at the iron ore mine in the Pilbara have been left shocked following a workplace related death overnight.
Mining giant Rio Tinto confirmed one person died at the Paraburdoo site, but could not release any further details.
"Overnight an incident occurred at our Paraburdoo mine operations that has resulted in a fatality" a company spokesperson said.
"Our deepest sympathies are with the person's family and friends at their loss.
"The incident is being investigated by the relevant authorities, with our full support."
The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety Mines is now investigating.
