All four lanes on the new Mandurah traffic bridge have opened.
All four lanes of the new Mandurah traffic bridge have been opened to the public, just in time for the holiday season.
The $51.8 million project was partially funded and initiated by the previous Liberal State Government.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said completing roadworks before Christmas would help boost access for the community to the shopping and cafe precincts in Mandurah.
Main Roads earlier this month unveiled a two part plan to allow all four lanes to be open to the public before Christmas.
The new concrete bridge was first opened for two lanes of traffic, under restricted conditions, in September 2017.
The stunning, curved structure was built in 13 segments on the western foreshore by construction crews from Georgiou Group.
Each segment was then barged over Mandurah Estuary to the eastern foreshore over many months from the specially constructed concrete casting bed.
The new bridge’s four traffic lanes are divided by a concrete median with a separate five metre-wide pedestrian and cyclist path located on the north side of the bridge.
The old bridge will continue to be demolished and is due to be completed by January 2018.
Work to complete paths, featuring boardwalks under the new bridge, and landscaping will continue through to February 2018.
Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams and Mandurah MLA David Templeman were both in attendance at the announcement, and agreed the bridge will help to connect members of the community to the Mandurah CBD.
"Completion of the roadworks for the Old Mandurah Traffic Bridge Replacement project marks a significant milestone for the Mandurah community as they have worked hard over a number of years to develop and implement a plan to replace the old bridge," Mayor Williams said.
Vintage cars and local competition winners were amongst the first people to travel over the newly opened lanes earlier this morning.
