$500,000 artwork for new Mandurah Bridge

PIC: Main Roads WA

There is a half-a-million-dollar opportunity for artists to create a public piece for the new Mandurah Bridge.

The City of Mandurah is calling for Expressions of Interest for artists to create a landmark public artwork to complement the new Mandurah Bridge currently under construction.

The City is working with arts consultants, Maker + Co and Artsource, to find multi-disciplinary artists to create works that share local stories, heritage and the community’s vision for a welcoming and multicultural city.

$500,000 has been allocated to realise the creative vision of the successful artist.

Mayor Marina Vergone said the City’s approach to the artwork exemplifies the vision for Mandurah as a connected and forward-thinking city that honours its past, celebrates the present and embraces its future.

“We know that this is such an important crossing that not only connects our city geographically but also our community spirit,” she said.

“This is such a rare and exciting opportunity for an artist to create a piece to enhance one of the biggest infrastructure projects that our city has ever seen.

“We hope to push the boundaries of public art by using new and interactive technologies that will create evolving points of interest and become synonymous with Mandurah.”

The public art project has evolved from community consultation to ensure the community maintains cultural links and connection to the bridge.

A brainstorming day, called Bridging Culture, was held in May and offered community members an opportunity to work with artists and other stakeholders to identify elements they would like to see the artwork represent.

The ideas generated by the Bridging Culture workshop form part of the briefing process for artists responding to the City’s expression of interest to create the public artwork/s.

Collaborative approaches to the creation of the artwork between traditional and nontraditional public artists, the community, innovators, and those working with emerging technologies are welcomed.
