Mundijong sport complex one step closer

The McGowan Government has acquired land for one of the state’s largest and most modern sport and recreation precincts.

The up to date complex will be housed in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale south of Keirnan Street and west of South Western Highway.

The Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct could accommodate football ovals, cricket pitches and nets, tennis, netball and basketball courts, swimming pools, a gymnasium, a national level BMX track and a range of other community and administrative facilities.

A 63 hectare site south of Keirnan Street and west of South Western Highway was last vested to the Shire by the State Government. 

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the acquisition was a significant step towards creating a true community precinct that would meet the needs of local clubs and athletes well into the future. 

“Local sporting clubs are crying out for new facilities that will allow them to grow and give their members the best opportunity to succeed," she said. 

“We have 120 sporting and community groups in the Shire and the unfortunate reality is that current facilities just don’t meet demand. Like our population, local clubs are growing rapidly and athletes are often forced outside of the Shire to practice and play. 

“Our vision for a sporting and recreation facility in Mundijong will change that. It will give clubs the room they need to grow and a home they can be truly proud of. It will be a focal point for community events, allow new sports to flourish, and be an area that every resident can utilise."

The Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct is planned to be delivered over six stages and is projected to up to $100 million.

“This is an ambitious project but one that our community want, need and deserve. We have worked closely with residents, and with the State Government since 2010 to acquire this land since and we welcome the government’s commitment to this community-defining project," Cr Rich said. 

She stressed that planning was still in its early stages, saying the Shire would now consult widely with sporting clubs, community groups and the public before releasing designs.  

“We want this precinct to be a source of community pride well into the future, which is why it’s important we do things right from the beginning,” she said. 

“We’re committed to progressing the planning process as quickly as possible and today’s announcement is certainly a big step forward.    

 “With the promise of a rail line to Byford, extension of Tonkin Highway, the growth of new industrial precincts creating thousands of jobs and now progress towards a regional sporting complex, it’s an incredibly exciting time to live in the Shire.”
