The City of Rockingham has started upgrades to Mundijong Road in Baldivis in a bid to improve safety for motorists.

The works are being carried out in response to a number of crashes at the curve between Telephone Lane and Duckpond Road.

The project includes construction of a median, installation of a crash barrier, additional street lighting and the realignment of a 750m stretch of road to remove substandard curves.

Works will run until December 2021 and the reconnection of the realigned section will require the closure of Mundijong Road for up to three months from early September subject to weather conditions.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the upgrades on Mundijong Road would support the targets outlined in the City’s Road Safety Action Plan.

“Mundijong Road is a major east-west connection between the Kwinana Freeway and South Western Highway that carries more than 6,000 vehicles per day within the City’s boundary,” he said.

“During the road closure that is expected to begin in early September, there will be detours in place via Karnup Road to the south and Thomas Road to the north.

"Electronic message boards will be deployed along Mundijong Road and the Kwinana Freeway prior to these closures, and the City thanks motorists in advance for their patience and understanding.”

The project will cost $2.9 million and the City has secured State Blackspot Funding to cover two-thirds of the overall project cost.
