The recent rain has delayed works on the new Mandurah bridge meaning Mandurah Terrace will remain closed for at least another two weeks.
Mandurah Terrace has been closed since July 31 when works began to connect the new bridge to Pinjarra Road but the wet weather in August has slowed down construction.
The City of Mandurah said in particular, the new asphalt cannot be laid in excessive wet weather, which means the original re-opening date for Mandurah Terrace on August 28 cannot be met.
A re-opening date has not yet been set but it’s anticipated to be around mid-September when vehicles will be able to drive on the new bridge for the first time.
The City and project partners Main Roads WA and Georgiou are working hard to make up the lost time where possible, including allocating additional resources and working on Saturdays.
Mandurah Terrace, from Pinjarra Road to Smart Street, is required to remain closed so the new bridge can be connected to the adjacent roads at the eastern end of the bridge, at the corner of Mandurah Terrace and Pinjarra Road.
The Old Mandurah Traffic Bridge and Pinjarra Road will remain open, and businesses are open and operating along Mandurah Terrace. Detours are in place via Sholl Street and Tuckey Street.
Mandurah Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman thanked businesses, road users, pedestrians and the wider community for their patience and understanding during this road closure period.
“Unfortunately, the recent bad weather has resulted in a small delay in the roadworks, and thus the reopening Mandurah Terrace, and we apologise for any additional inconvenience this may cause for businesses and the community.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their understanding, and we are pushing ahead to make sure the bridge connection works are finished as soon as possible."
