A young man will spend the next 19 years behind bars after stabbing a 17-year-old boy to death following a party in Waikiki.

Chikayne Heslip was attacked by a group of males after the party spilled onto the street in December 2020.

He was set upon after one of the assailants thought the victim had thrown a bottle, but there had never been any evidence of that.

The court heard Kingston Coomer stabbed Chikayne at least 32 times while he laid helpless on the ground.

A number of partygoers filmed the attack and posted it online.

Coomer was found guilty of murder by a jury earlier this year.

The now 19-year-old was sentenced to a minimum of 19 years in prison.

Justice Michael Corboy described the stabbing as a "senseless and inexplicable act of violence".

The victim's mother read a victim impact statement in court, the West Australian reports.

“The loss of a child is like no other,” she said.

“He was a living, breathing human with his whole life in front of him.

“You took so much from us, you took so much from Chikayne.

“My family is broken and I don’t know how we’re supposed to move on from here.

“As a family, we’ll never forgive you.”
