Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby has urged motorists to drive with caution as overnight road works get underway from this evening.

Works will tonight commence on widening the Kwinana Freeway, with the $49 million dollar project designed to fix congestion and reduce delays caused by the notorious Cockburn bottleneck.

“At first, work is being carried out at night to reduce disruption to motorists,” Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby said.

“This is a fantastic project and commuters will be glad that work has begun but motorists should be cautious of changing conditions on the freeway.

“Drivers will need to be extra careful when driving after 8pm when night time road works are under way between October 31 and November 6.

“Drivers also need to be ready for changed conditions when they use the freeway each morning.

“The night works are part of the Northbound Widening project between Russell Road and Roe Highway.

Line removal and barrier deployment works are being undertaken on the section of the freeway between Russell Road and Beeliar Drive.

The following traffic changes will also be in place:

·From October 31 to November 6, 8pm to 6am: Single lane and emergency lane closures on freeway, with speed reduction to 60km/h.

·Friday 2 November, 8pm to 6am: Closure of the northbound Russell Road on-ramp.Signed detours will be in place via Hammond Road to Beeliar Drive and Tapper Road to Armadale Road.

·Saturday 3 November, 8pm to 6am: Closure of the northbound Beeliar Drive off-ramp. Traffic will be diverted to the Berrigan Drive off-ramp and loop back to the southbound Armadale Road off-ramp.

When the scheduled works conclude on 6 November, there will be a new lane alignment on the Kwinana Freeway northbound between Russell Road and Beeliar Drive.

This will include reduced lane widths and a speed reduction to 80km/h which will remain until late 2019.
