A new community initiative focused on building local food systems and reducing waste that ends up in landfill is coming to the City of Rockingham.

The City is one of the first local governments in Western Australia to support the Grow It Local initiative, which encourages people to grow, share and eat locally grown food.

The City will be partnering with a number of local groups as part of Grow It Local, including the Baldivis Community Garden, to deliver the program.

The initiative comes from the creators of Australia’s award winning Garage Sale Trail and provides participants with an online community and marketplace for backyard, balcony, community garden and window-sill farmers to connect, share, learn and swap produce.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said Grow It Local would encourage positive sustainable living behaviours and food systems.

“The City is proud to be one of the first local governments to support this new community initiative, which will give people the chance to connect with nature, inspire positive health outcomes and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Grow It Local will allow growers to put their own patch on the map, as well as providing the opportunity for people to share knowledge, sell their produce or connect with experts.”

Baldivis Community Garden member Janet Frost said a community garden has a strong social aspect which gives people the chance to be involved in something that is much more than just gardening.

“We’re excited for Grow It Local as it offers the opportunity to promote and share local produce, and engage with local people,” Ms Frost said.
