Community Citizen of the Year recognised in Rockingham

A number of hardworking community groups and local residents have been formally recognised for their outstanding community contributions during the City of Rockingham's 2021 Community Citizen of the Year awards.

The awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made a notable contribution during the current year and those who have given outstanding service over a number of years. 

Local residents Karin Gulliver, who has dedicated many years to helping boost literacy across the community through her work with the Read Write Now adult literacy program, was recognised as Community Citizen of the Year.

The Senior Community Citizen of the Year award was presented to Allan Leslie West for his advocacy work in support of former defence force personnel. 

While the Active Citizenship (Group or Event) award was shared by the Rockingham Uniting Church Opportunity Shop and the Silver Chain Volunteer Fundraiser Group.

Both groups were recognised for the support they provided to the community for more than 50 years. 

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels congratulated the winners for their efforts across the community.

“The Community Citizen of the Year Award winners for 2021 have all brought about positive change to our City,” he said.

“They have demonstrated leadership, initiative and active citizenship, which has significantly contributed to the value of community life in Rockingham."

Presentation of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards was held prior to the City’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, which saw 70 people officially become Australian citizens at the Gary Holland Community Centre.
