The Byford Metronet rail extension project has reached a new milestone, with the State Government announcing a new ground-level station will be built in the heart of Byford Town Centre.

Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Cr Michelle Rich welcomed the awarding of the contract for the $625 million Byford Metronet rail extension project, funded by the State and Federal Governments.

Cr Rich said the Council’s preference and advocacy position has been for an elevated station within the Byford Town Centre.

“We believe an elevated station in Byford would provide better connectivity in the Town Centre, and would be a better long-term outcome,” Cr Rich said

“Of the new stations being built on the Armadale Line, Byford is the only station being built at grade.

“The Shire thanks the State Government for the project including the construction of approximately 2.5km of local roads and the station being located in the Byford Town Centre.”

New roads to be constructed include:

• a new Clara Street (West) which will connect from George Street west across the rail line to the west part of Byford town centre;

• an extension of San Simeon Boulevard through to Abernethy Road; and

• completing the section of George Street between Larsen Road and Evans Way.

Cr Rich said the Shire would continue to work in partnership with the State Government and our community to ensure the new Byford Station precinct was safe, accessible and vibrant.

“The new Byford station is a key element to realising our shared vision for a connected and transport-oriented town centre,” Cr Rich said.

“The Shire looks forward to working collaboratively with the State Government to improve bus services to connect towns in the Shire with the new Byford station.

“The 8km extension of the rail line from Armadale to Byford will help continue the transformation of Byford as one of the most important strategic activity centres in Perth’s south-east corridor in one of the Australia’s fastest growing local government areas.”
