A skydiver who died during a formation jump at the Australian Skydiving Championships in York has been identified as a 36-year-old Victorian man.
A skydiver who died during a formation jump at the Australian Skydiving Championships in York has been identified as a 36-year-old Victorian man.
According to Skydive Australia, the man’s parachute became entangled with another during a formation jump with his Victorian team about 5pm on Thursday.
He then collided with another jumper before plummeting to the ground.
The RAC rescue helicopter and an ambulance were sent to the scene at Spencers Brook Road in Burges but the man could not be saved.
The championships were put on hold after the man’s death, but a meeting between the 200-plus competitors on Thursday night saw a unanimous vote to continue the competition as a mark of respect and a show of solidarity.
Police are investigating and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
