A woman has survived following a horrific crash which closed the freeway during peak hour yesterday.

A 27-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after her car was crushed by a truck on the Kwinana Freeway.

The crash took place before 4pm yesterday, forcing the closure of the freeway northbound at Russell Road in Success.

The woman behind the wheel of a Hyundai was trapped for half an hour before emergency services could cut her free.

She was then rushed to the state trauma unit at Royal Perth Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

The truck driver was removed from the large vehicle shortly after.

There were four cars involved in the crash and by 6pm the freeway was still closed northbound between Russell Road and Beeliar Drive.

In total three adults and one child were taken to hospitals around Perth for treatment of injuries.

It's still not known how the accident happened.
